Product Overview

Application Scenarios

Wing nuts (DIN 315), also called butterfly nuts, have two upright wings that let them be threaded on and off quickly by hand with no tool. They are the standard choice wherever a fastening must be adjusted, opened or removed often — machine guards and covers, filter housings, battery terminals, electrical panels, HVAC access panels, test rigs, furniture, sports and camping equipment. The American-form wings give a firm finger grip; stainless A2 / A4 versions suit damp, outdoor and food-contact use, and the low clamp force keeps them best for light-duty, frequently-serviced joints rather than structural loads.

Installation Notes

Run the wing nut down by hand until the wings meet the surface, then nip it up firmly with finger-and-thumb pressure on the wings — no wrench is needed or wanted, as heavy tooling can bend the wings. Use a flat washer under the nut to spread the load and protect the surface, and a spring washer where mild vibration is present. Wing nuts give a modest clamp force by design, so use them for covers, guards and adjustable joints rather than high-load structural connections, and choose stainless or plated finishes for wet or outdoor use.

Material & Certification

Cold-forged from austenitic stainless steel — A2 (AISI 304) or A4 (AISI 316) — to DIN 315, with wing span and thread gauge-checked and every batch traceable to raw material certificates. Each lot passes dimensional inspection before packaging; EN 10204 3.1 material certificates are available on request.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much can you tighten a wing nut?
Only as much as firm finger pressure on the wings allows — that is the point of the design. Wing nuts are made for hand tightening on covers, guards and frequently-removed parts, and give a light-to-moderate clamp force. Do not force them up with pliers or a wrench: the extra load bends the wings without meaningfully increasing clamp, and for high-load joints a standard hex nut should be used instead.
Which strength grade should I choose?
Wing nuts are supplied in zinc-plated carbon steel and in A2 / A4 stainless, and in the American (cold-forged) form for a firm grip. They are a light-duty, hand-tightened fastener, so material and finish — rather than a strength grade — are the main choice: pick stainless for wet, outdoor or food-contact use. Confirm the thread size and finish your job needs before ordering.
Do you provide mill/material certificates?
Yes. EN 10204 3.1 material certificates are available on request, along with dimensional inspection reports, for projects requiring documented traceability.
Can you produce non-standard lengths or custom head types?
Yes. Send us your drawing or sample and we will confirm feasibility, material and dimensions before quoting — custom OEM/ODM production is available alongside our standard DIN 315 range.
