The head of a screw does more than give you something to drive — it determines how the screw sits, how it spreads load, and how the finished surface looks. Three of the most common machine and self-tapping screw heads are countersunk (flat), pan head, and button head. Understanding their differences helps you specify the right screw the first time.
Countersunk (Flat) Head Screws
A countersunk screw has a flat top and a cone-shaped underside, usually at an 82° or 90° angle. It seats into a matching countersunk hole so the head sits flush with — or below — the surface. This makes it the go-to choice wherever a smooth, snag-free finish is required, such as sliding surfaces, panels, and visible trim. The cone also helps center the screw as it seats.
Pan Head Screws
A pan head has a rounded top with a flat bearing underside and a relatively large diameter. Because it sits on top of the surface, it does not require countersinking, and its wide flat underside spreads clamping load over a broad area. Pan heads are a versatile general-purpose choice for sheet metal, electronics, and machinery where a slightly raised head is acceptable.
Button Head Screws
A button head has a low, domed profile with a wide bearing surface, usually driven by an internal hex socket. It offers a finished, rounded appearance while keeping a lower profile than a pan head. Button heads are popular where looks matter and where a smooth dome is safer for handling than a sharp edge, though the shallow socket limits how much torque you can apply.
Side-by-Side Comparison
| Feature | Countersunk | Pan Head | Button Head |
|---|---|---|---|
| Profile | Flush | Raised, flat-top | Low dome |
| Needs countersinking | Yes | No | No |
| Load spread | Into cone | Wide, high | Wide, moderate |
| Torque capacity | Moderate | High | Lower |
| Appearance | Invisible/flush | Functional | Decorative dome |
How to Choose
- Need a flush, snag-free surface? Use countersunk — but you must drill a matching countersink.
- Need maximum clamping over sheet material without extra machining? Use pan head.
- Want a clean, rounded look with a low profile? Use button head, but keep torque moderate.
Material and Drive Options
All three heads are available in carbon steel, alloy steel and stainless, with Phillips, Pozidriv, slotted, Torx or internal hex drives. Match the drive to your assembly tools and the material and coating to your environment. A source factory can supply any head-drive-material combination and produce custom lengths to your drawing.
